Consular Services – Guidelines and Requirements
1. Emergency Travel Document (ETD) Requirements
- Applicants must submit the following:
- A duly completed and signed application form;
- Proof of identity, including one or more of the following:
– Copy of passport;
– Copy of nationality certificate;
– Birth certificate or assessment of age certificate;
– Any other legal documentation supporting the applicant’s claim to South Sudanese nationality;
- Four (4) passport-size photographs;
- Police report (in cases of lost or stolen passports);
- Processing fee of USD $25, payable by money order to: Embassy of the Republic of South Sudan; and
- A prepaid, self-addressed return envelope with tracking (FedEx, UPS, or DHL).
Important Information
- The ETD is valid only for travel to South Sudan from the United States or Canada.
- ETDs may be issued in exceptional circumstances, including:
– South Sudanese nationals unable to use expired, lost, or damaged passports;
– Dual nationals requiring urgent travel to South Sudan who cannot reasonably use their foreign passport.
- The Embassy reserves the right to decline applications where:
- Sufficient justification or documentation is not provided; or
- There are reasonable grounds to believe the applicant seeks to evade legal obligations in the United States or Canada.
2. Letter of No Objection (Repatriation of Deceased Persons)
To request a No Objection Letter for the repatriation of a deceased person to South Sudan, applicants must provide:
- Copy of the death certificate;
- Letter from the funeral home;
- Copy of the deceased’s passport, travel document, or residence permit; and
- Letter from the family requesting repatriation of the remains.
Processing
Documents may be submitted by:
- A prepaid, self-addressed return envelope must be included for mailed applications.

- Processing is completed within the same business day; and
- No fee is charged for this service.
3. Translation of Documents
The Embassy provides certified translation services (Arabic to English) for documents authenticated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in Juba.
Eligible Documents
- Birth or age assessment certificates;
- Marriage certificates or licenses;
- Divorce certificates or decrees; and
- South Sudan driver’s licenses (original required).
Requirements and Processing Fee
- Copy of valid identification (passport or ID); and
- Applicable supporting documents.
- USD 30 per document
4. Registration of Birth (Children Born Abroad)
The Embassy registers children born in the United States or Canada to South Sudanese parents.
- Authenticated birth certificate (U.S. Department of State);
- Passport copies of both parents; and
- Passport-size photographs of the child.
Services Provided
- Registration of birth;
- Issuance of the South Sudan nationality certificate; and Processing of the South Sudan passport.
- A newborn may also be issued an Emergency Travel Document to facilitate travel to South Sudan.
5. Interviewing and Issuance of Travel Documents for Deportation Purposes Current Procedure
In line with its commitment to cooperating with the immigration authorities of the United States and Canada, the Embassy has established a nationality verification process (interview).
- Individuals subject to deportation who claim South Sudanese nationality will be required to undergo a formal interview conducted by the Consular or Immigration Attaché;
- Where nationality is confirmed, an Emergency Travel Document (ETD) will be issued to facilitate lawful return to South Sudan; and
- Applicants without valid identification documents must undergo this interview process to determine eligibility.
All determinations are made in accordance with applicable laws and established consular procedures.
